The Guide is a novel by R.K. Narayan
Story
Raju , who is a rogue and a tourist guide, falls in love with a married woman and they live together. He commits forgery and gets imprisoned.
Upon release, he takes refuge in a temple. He is mistaken by a peasant as a holy man. He poses as on and lives off the offerings. He does his job so well that he gains followers and eventually, apparently even God intervenes on his behalf.
