The King of Comedy is a 1983 film directed by Martin Scorsese starring Robert De Niro. Jerry Lewis, in his first dramatic role in many years, co-stars. Sandra Bernhard is also featured.
Rupert Pupkin (DeNiro) an aspiring stand-up comic, is determined to get invited to appear on a popular evening television talk show hosted by his idol Jerry Langford (Lewis). His efforts to do this in the conventional manner have been unsuccessful, primarily due to his abysmal lack of talent. Pupkin, however, is the type who refuses to take no for an answer, and resorts to stalking, and finally to more desperate and drastic measures, to achieve his goal of becoming the person described by the film's title.
