1) Fans and scholars of 2001: A Space Odyssey refer to the mysterious big, black slab as "The Monolith." In one of the Arthur C. Clarke short works of fiction that the film is based on this object is called The Sentinel, 1951 and resembles a pyramid.
2) The Monolith was a comic book series by DC Comics. It was written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti with Phil Winslade as the regular penciller/inker. It was discontinued after 12 issues
Premise
The series involves a golem created in Brooklyn during the 1930s to protect immigrant workers. When an innocent man is killed, Alice Cohen, the woman who loved him, along with a rabbi and Chinese carpenter, use his blood to create a Golem. They then send it out after the gangsters who are responsible for his death. After a year of hunting criminals, the Monolith, as the golem is known, goes too far and cripples a boy. In response, its creators trap him by magic in an underground tunnel. Alice Cohen moves into a house above the tunnel, in order to keep it company.
In the 21st century, Alice dies and leaves the house to her granddaughter of the same name. This Alice, a drug addict on the run from her dealer, discovers the Monolith. When the dealer and his cronies come gunning for Alice, she is forced to unleash the Monolith.
Characters
- Alice Cohen, granddaughter of the first Alice. She finds herself struggling with drug addiction while trying to control the Monolith.
- Tilt, Alice's best friend and roomate. An ex-prostitute, she is the less mature of the two. Nevertheless, she finds herself also responsible for the Monolith
- The Monolith, A golem created by from the blood of a murdered man. The creature viciously hunts those who prey on the innocent. He is psychically linked to Brooklyn and able to sense where crimes will happen. Strangely, it has a very childlike personality which both makes it innocent and dangerous.
