At the center of the series is U.S. Senator William Powers, his status-hungry wife, Margaret, his aides Jordan Miller and Bradley Grist. The family included the wacky Caitlyn Van Horne, her husband Theodore a Congressman and their son Pierce, Charlotte, their maid, and Sophie Lipkin, the Senator's illegitimate daughter.
