The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is an organization of mostly gay men who dress as nuns, often on rollerskates. They are involved in activism in the gay community, raise money for AIDS projects, and preach a message of safer sex.
The organization was started in 1979 in the Castro District of San Francisco, California, and has grown to include sister houses in locations such as Seattle, Washington (1987), Los Angeles, California (1995), as well as England, France, Germany, Scotland, Australia, and Colombia.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence has raised over $1,000,000 and distributed it to non-profit organizations that serve the queer and sex positive community. Originally, the organization included only gay male nuns, but it now includes men and women who identify as gay, straight, bisexual, and transgendered.
In 1987 The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were placed on the Papal List of Heretics by the Pope upon his visit to San Francisco.
Today, The Sisters continue with their quest to promulate universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt.
