The Waltons - Definition and Overview

The Waltons was an American television series about a family living in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. state of Virginia. The family, consisting of Olivia and John Walton and their seven children, struggles to live a decent life during the Great Depression and the Second World War. The audience follows this family's existence through the eyes of John-Boy, the eldest son and an aspiring novelist.

The show was created by Earl Hamner Jr. Its production by Lorimar Productions started on September 14, 1972, and the final episode was aired on August 20, 1981. Some specials followed in the 1980s and '90s. The program aired on the CBS network.
