The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (ねじまき鳥クロニクル, Nejimaki-dori kuronikuru) (ISBN 0679775439) is a novel by Haruki Murakami. It is about a man, Toru Okada, whose cat disappears. Eventually his wife also vanishes, and several other fantastic events also occur, which Toru must unravel to find his wife again. Also examined in the novel is the Manchukuo episode of World War II and its place in Japanese history.
For this novel, Murakami recieved the Yomiuri Literary Award, which was awarded to him by one of his harshest former critics, Oe Kenzaburo.
