Theo van Gogh (art dealer) - Definition and Overview

Théodore van Gogh (1857-1890), best known by his nickname "Theo", was the brother of Vincent van Gogh. He worked as an art dealer during his life, and often helped support his brother financially by selling his paintings. Van Gogh was also instrumental in the popularity of Impressionist artists such as Georges-Pierre Seurat and Pierre-Auguste Renoir by persuading his employers, Goupil & Cie, to exhibit their works.

Vincent was very close to his brother and wrote him frequently. These letters are often collected and published into books, as revealing of the artist's mind and nature.

After Vincent committed suicide in 1890, Theo sank into a deep depression and died six months later, presumably from complications of syphilis. He was buried alongside his brother; both bodies were subsequently moved.

His great-grandson, also named Theo van Gogh, was a film director, famous for his controversial criticism of Islam.
