Thomas of Ercildoun or "Thomas the Rhymer" (1220 - 1297) was a Scottish minstrel to whom is ascribed Sir Tristrem, a rhyme or story for recitation. He had a reputation for prophecy, and is reported to have foretold the death of Alexander III of Scotland, and various other events. He signed himself "Thomas Rymour de Ercieldoune". "Ercildoun" was Earlston, in the Scottish Borders.
