Sir Thomas Rich was the benefactor of Sir Thomas Rich's school in Gloucester. As a wealthy merchant he bequeathed £16,000 in his will to "educate the poor boys of the city" and a Blue Coat hospital was founded in 1666. The school today is a boys grammar school (with co-educational sixth form).
