Tom Tunney is a Chicago Alderman for the 44th ward. He was elected to office on February 25, 2003, succeeding longtime "ward boss" Bernie Hansen; reports stated he was Hansen's "hand-picked" choice.
Tunney is Chicago's first openly gay alderman. He is also the patriarch of his well known family who own and operate the Ann Sathers restaurants found only in Chicago. Before being elected as an Alderman Tom worked in a wide variety of community based organizations in such capacities as:
- Chairman of the Illinois Restaurant Association
- Founder and president of the Lakeview Center Business Association
- Founding board member and a chairman of the White Crane Senior Center
Politically and economically, the 44th ward of Chicago is among of the most powerful, including some of Chicago's most affluent citizens and is comprised of the well known Lakeview and Wrigleyville neighborhoods. Both are well known neighborhood destinations in Chicago.
Tom Tunney is originally from the St. Thomas More Parish on the Southwest Side of Chicago.
