 Tiberius III - Definition

Tiberius III (d. 705) was Byzantine emperor from 698-705. He was actually a German army officer named Apsimar, and had first overthrown the general John the Patrician when John was defeated at Carthage in 697. Apsimar then led a siege against Constantinople, where other officers loyal to him opened the gates and proclaimed him emperor. He mutilated and imprisoned Leontius II.

As emperor Tiberius III ignored Africa, but attacked the Arabs in the east, winning minor victories. Meanwhile, in 703, Justinian II escaped from exile and made his way back to Constantinople in 705. Justinian easily regained control, and had Tiberius captured and executed.
