The United States has a rich and complicated diplomatic history. Although some of its key figures at the time of its founding, such as George Washington and Thomas Paine, envisioned a nation separated diplomatically from the wars of Europe, the United States soon became part of a conflict between France and Britain during the Napoleonic wars.
