Tiptronic transmissions are conventional torque converter based automatic transmissions which have a mode in which the driver controls up- and downshifts. The Tiptronic name is used exclusively by certain German automakers including Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche.
In this system, gears are generally selected by moving the console-mounted shift lever to the right of the 'Drive' position and then bumping it forward or back longitudinally. In some sports cars paddles behind the steering wheel are used, in rough mimicry of the system seen in Formula 1 cars, although F1 cars use a conventional seven speed gearbox and a computer-controlled clutch.
