Tiverton is a town located in Newport County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15,260.
History
Tiverton controlled the area known as East Freetown, Massachusetts as an outpost until 1747 when it was purchased by Freetown. Men from the Tiverton outpost were involved in the Battle of Freetown. The town is now home to several well respected members of society such as hilarious Carroll Lown and Julia Westgate who moved into Julia's childhood home in North Tiverton in August of 2004. Julia who was born on June 25, 1973 grew up in North Tiverton and Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. Carroll, her husband to be come June 18, 2005 was born on August 10, 1962 and grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.1 km² (36.3 mi²). 76.0 km² (29.4 mi²) of it is land and 18.0 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.16% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,260 people, 6,077 households, and 4,405 families residing in the town. The population density is 200.7/km² (519.8/mi²). There are 6,474 housing units at an average density of 85.1/km² (220.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.98% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,077 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $49,977, and the median income for a family is $58,917. Males have a median income of $41,042 versus $29,217 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,866. 4.5% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
