Tongeren - Definition

Tongeren (French Tongres, German Tongern) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg near Hasselt. On January 1st, 2004 Tongeren had a total population of 29,531 (14,470 males and 15,061 females). The total area is 87.56 km² which gives a population density of 337.26 inhabitants per km². Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium. Known as Atuatuca Tungrorum to the Romans, it was the administrative centre of the district Tungri under their rule.
