Too Much was the Spice Girls' sixth single release in the UK (fifth in the US) and the second release from their second album, Spiceworld. Unlike their first album, Spice, Spiceworld did not span as massive hits worlwide and itself was not as much of a successful follow up as people had predicted, but still managed to appeal to the public wide enough to be a memorable album. Too Much did better than its predecessor, Spice Up Your Life, but once again, did not get a large level of airplay in the US, but large sales ensured it became a hit. It peaked quickly in the US making No.8, 5 places higher than Spice Up Your Life. In the UK, it became a No.1 hit for 2 weeks, claiming the Christmas No.1 of 1997 and making the Spice Girls the first ever act to have their first six singles make No.1.

Too Much was a slower song than Spice Up Your Life and the video saw the girls going their separate ways. It could be said this was the start of their separation, because it was around this time that the girls say things began to get tough between them. For the majority of the video the girls are all separate and their actions and surroundings reflect their own identities. The song's lyrics also slightly reflect tough times and the harshness and brutality of life.
