The Torne River, also Torniojoki (in Finnish) or Torne älv (in Swedish), is a river on the border between Sweden and Finland. Following the Treaty of Fredrikshamn in 1809 the river was chosen as a demarkation line for the new border between Sweden and the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland dividing the provinces of Laponia and Westrobothnia.
Cities on the Torne River often have both Swedish and Finnish names, like Haparanda (Haaparanta) and Tornio (Torneå), which are located where the river flows into the Gulf of Bothnia.
