Thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) or transthyretin is the major binding protein of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream. It also carries retinol. Due to its small size and negative charge, it shows on protein electrophoresis as a small band before albumin, which explains its other name pre-albumin.
Genomically, TBG is a serpin, although it has no inhibitory function like many other members of this class of proteins.
