Trapani - Definition and Overview

Trapani is the name of a city in the western part of the Italian island of Sicily, of 68,346 inhabitants (2001). It is the capital of the province of Trapani.

The ancient name of Trapani was Drepana, it's placed on the western corner of Sicily, just out into the Mediterranean Sea in the shape of a sickle.

Over the centuries the salt-pans and the salt industries have created a unique environment of great cultural and economic relevance. This route is called Via del sale (the salt road). On this road there are several mills.
