Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji - Definition and Overview

The Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji (Küçük Kaynarca) was signed on July 21, 1774, between Russia (represented by Field-Marshal Rumyantsev) and the Ottoman Empire after the Ottoman Empire was defeated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774.

The Ottomans lost the Crimean Khanate, which according to the treaty was supposed to become independent. In reality, the Khanate become dependent on Russia.

The treaty allowed Ottoman Christians to sail under the Russian flag.

The treaty was misinterpreted as giving Russia the right to protect Orthodox Christians in the Empire. It also provided for building a Russian Orthodox Church in Constantinople, which was never built.

The treaty was violated by Russia in 1783 when it annexed the Crimean Khanate.
