The Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte was signed in autumn 911 between Charles the Simple and Rollo, chief Viking for the purpose of settling the Normans in Neustria to protect the kingdom of Charles from any new invasion from the "northmen". No writing is known of what create the Duchy of Normandy. In addition Rollon was to be baptised and marry Gisele, the illegitimate daughter of Charles, and become the vassal of the king. About this last point History tell us that it became complicated since Rollo refused to knee in front of the king and kiss its foot. A compromise was found and it was a close to Rollo that took the foot of the king but not keeling and taking it so high that the king lost its balance and fell.
