Tremont is a town located in Itawamba County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 390.

Geography

Tremont is located at 34°13'53" North, 88°14'50" West (34.231492, -88.247352)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.8 km² (5.0 mi²). 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.20% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 390 people, 153 households, and 111 families residing in the town. The population density is 30.4/km² (78.9/mi²). There are 178 housing units at an average density of 13.9/km² (36.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.15% White, 1.54% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 153 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $27,143, and the median income for a family is $35,341. Males have a median income of $31,042 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,348. 16.4% of the population and 14.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.3% of those under the age of 18 and 19.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
