Tsuruoka - Definition and Overview

Tsuruoka (鶴岡市; -shi) is a city located in the Shonai region of Yamagata, Japan.

Tsuruoka is the third largest city in Yamagata Prefecture after Yamagata City and Sakata. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 99,309 and the density of 424.56 persons per km². The total area is 233.91 km².

The city was founded on October 1, 1924 becoming Japan's 100th city.
