 Tupac Amaru - Definition

This article refers to the Inca Túpac Amaru who died in 1572, see Túpac Amaru II for the man whose Christian name was José Gabriel Condorcanqui.

Túpac Amaru (died September 24, 1572) was the last indigenous leader of the Inca people. The son of Manco Inca Yupanqui (also known as Manco Capac II), he was made a priest and the guardian of his father's body. After his half brother, the Inca (Titu Cusi) died in 1570, Túpac Amaru assumed the title of Supa Inca. At this time the Inca empire had lost Cuzco, and held only the region of Vilcabamba, a few dozen kilometers north of Cuzco. He was captured in the Amazon after fleeing Vilcabamba during a Spanish attack, and was later murdered by the Spanish viceroy.
