A two by four (or two-by-four or 2x4) is the name of a particular inch size of lumber. In the The Americas it is probably the most common lumber size used in modern construction: two by fours are the basic building block for such common structures as balloon-frame or platform frame housing.
Originally these boards were two inches by four inches in cross-section, with an indeterminate length. Due to changes in the way lumber is cut, they now usually measure approximately 1 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches.
