USS Defiant (NCC-1764) - Definition and Overview

In the fictional Star Trek universe, the USS Defiant (NCC-1764) was a Federation Constitution class starship. She was one of the original 13 Constitution class starships. The Defiant was seen in the original series episode The Tholian Web.

In 2268, Starfleet lost contact with the Defiant. The Enterprise found her on the border of Tholian space. She was drifting in and out of sensor contact when found. Captain Kirk and a bording party found that the crew was dead, they had all went insane and killed each other.

While on the Defiant, the crew found that the ship was starting to disappear. The transporters on the Enterprise weren't working at 100%, Kirk remained behind while the rest of the crew beamed back. The Defiant then disappeared with Kirk on board. The crew was soon confronted by the Tholian Loskene on the grounds that the Federation violated Tholian space.

The Tholians soon began building their trademark energy web around the Enterprise. Science officer Spock soon found that the entire area was littered with areas of interphase between universes. Doctor McCoy discovered that the interphase caused a biochemical imbalance, this is what killed the Defiant crew. He was able to synthesize medication to counteract the effects of the interphase. The Enterprise was able to use the interphase to escape, and recover Captain Kirk. However the Defiant was presumed destroyed while in Interphase (however, see below).

About a century later, the Defiant class starship, named after the Constitution class Defiant was built. This ship saw action during the second Borg invasion, and the Dominion War.

A two-part episode of Star Trek: Enterprise called "In a Mirror, Darkly", scheduled to air in the late spring of 2005, will reveal what happened to the Defiant after it disappeared.
