Building of a Montana-class battleship to be named USS Maine (BB-69) in honor of the 23rd state was authorized July 19, 1940, and assigned to the New York Navy Yard; but, before her keel was laid, construction was canceled July 21, 1943. Maine would have been the third ship to bear that name had she been commissioned. Other ships of the United States Navy have borne the name Maine; see that index page.
