Three ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Susquehanna for a river which rises in Lake Otsego in central New York and flows across Pennsylvania and the northeast corner of Maryland to empty into Chesapeake Bay. The first USS Susquehanna was a sidewheel steamer that served as the flagship of Commodore Matthew Perry's Black Fleet and during the American Civil War. The second USS Susquehanna, was named Rhein at the outbreak of World War I when she sought refuge in the port of Baltimore and was seized there when the United States entered the war. The third USS Susquehanna (AOG-5), a Patapsco-class gasoline tanker, served during World War II. |
