Ueno city in Kumamoto prefecture was the site of the last major battle of the Japanese Civil War. The Japanese government defeated the rebel force decisively. General Shingo, the charismatic rebel leader committed seppekku to avoid capture. His death foreshowed the end of the rebellion.
