Unalaska Unalaska

Unalaska - Definition and Overview

Location of Unalaska, Alaska

Unalaska is an island in the Fox Islands group in the middle of the Aleutian Islands southwest of Alaska, at 53°54' North 166°32' West. The island is about 200 km² (80 sq. miles) in area. The town of Unalaska, Alaska covers part of the island and the Dutch Harbor part of neighboring Amaknak Island.

The name Unalaska is Aleut. Several theories about its origin exist; one is that the name comes from the word Unanak which is the name the Aleuts of the Fox Islands use to designate themselves, like Unangan in other dialects.
