Union County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 25,362. Its county seat is New Albany6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,080 km² (417 mi²). 1,076 km² (415 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 25,362 people, 9,786 households, and 7,241 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (61/mi²). There are 10,693 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.42% White, 14.95% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,786 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,682, and the median income for a family is $39,666. Males have a median income of $29,087 versus $21,418 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,700. 12.60% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.10% of those under the age of 18 and 20.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
