Union County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 123,677. Its county seat is Monroe6.

History

The county was formed in 1842 from parts of Anson County and Mecklenburg County. Its name was a compromise between Whigs, who wanted to name the new county for Henry Clay, and Democrats, who wanted to name it for Andrew Jackson.

Union County is a member of the regional Centralina Council of Governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,657 km² (640 mi²). 1,651 km² (637 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.

The county is divided into nine townships: Buford, Goose Creek, Jackson, Lanes Creek, Marshville, Monroe, New Salem, Sandy Ridge, and Vance.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 123,677 people, 43,390 households, and 34,278 families residing in the county. The population density is 75/km² (194/mi²). There are 45,695 housing units at an average density of 28/km² (72/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.83% White, 12.52% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.64% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 6.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 43,390 households out of which 39.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.30% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.00% are non-families. 17.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 33.20% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 9.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $50,638, and the median income for a family is $56,197. Males have a median income of $37,125 versus $26,577 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,978. 8.10% of the population and 5.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.60% of those under the age of 18 and 10.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
