Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,132 km² (437 mi²). 1,131 km² (437 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,909 people, 14,346 households, and 10,888 families residing in the county. The population density is 36/km² (94/mi²). There are 15,217 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.25% White, 2.81% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,346 households out of which 38.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.40% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.10% are non-families. 19.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
