United Iraqi Alliance - Definition and Overview

The United Iraqi Alliance is one of the electoral coalitions participating in the January 30, 2005 National Assembly election in Iraq. The party is made up of mainstream Shi'a Islamic religious parties in the Iraqi Interim Government, liberal secularists, representatives of junior cleric Moqtada Sadr, nuclear physicist Hussain Shahristani and some independent Sunni representatives. It is generally believed to be supported by senior Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who has, however, offered no official endorsement. The party is widely favored to win the most seats in the election.
