Universal Media Disc: Front Universal Media Disc: Back The Universal Media Disc (UMD) is a disc medium developed by Sony for use on the PlayStation Portable. It can hold 1.80 gigabytes of data compressed, ranging from games to movies to music. The UMD has been specially developed by Sony for just this console. However, unlike the Minidisc, which was also a proprietary Sony-developed format, it will not be commercially available as empty discs, so to avoid piracy.
