The University of North Carolina, often called the University of North Carolina System to avoid confusion, is a federation of all sixteen public universities in North Carolina. The flagship school is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

History

The system was established in 1932 as the Consolidated University of North Carolina with three campuses; three more were added in the 1960s. It assumed its present name July 1, 1972, with the incorporation of the remaining ten state-supported four-year institutions.
