The University of Tasmania (sometimes known by the moniker UTAS, UTas or Tas Uni) is an Australian university.

It has two main campuses - the Hobart campus, located in Sandy Bay, an inner suburb; and the Launceston campus, located in Newnham. The University also has a small North-west campus, located in Burnie, which allows students from that part of the state to complete the first year of certain courses without moving away from home.

It and the Australian Maritime College are the only higher education institutions in Tasmania. UTAS was founded in January, 1890.

The university is organised into six faculties:

  • Faculty of Arts
  • Faculty of Commerce
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Health Science
  • Faculty of Law
  • Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology

The university is noted for being one of the oldest in Australia and has undergone a fairly steady increase in student population since its reorganisation in 1991.

The current vice-chancellor is Professor Daryl Le Grew, who recently made news by announcing that the University of Tasmania would not increase HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) fees for the 2005 academic year.
