While not an actual neighborhood name, Upper Manhattan, located on Manhattan Island, New York is an important distinction to make. Markedly different than what most people think of when they hear "Manhattan", the exact delineation of Upper Manhattan is subject to some debate. The term often just applies to Washington Heights and Inwood, but can also include Harlem and sometimes even the Upper East and West Sides.
Upper Manhattan is still highly urban but much less glitzy than the rest of the island. The East Side-West Side distinction means nothing there, since Manhattan Island becomes much more narrow at the top, and the neighborhoods become much more like the Bronx than Manhattan.
