Urban bicycling is cycling in built-upon urban areas.
It generally consists of short- to long- distance riding almost exclusively in urban areas and their surroundings, sharing the road with other vehicles, primarily motorised ones
Benefits of urban cycling
- It reduces traffic congestion, as bicycles take up less physical space than cars
- There is no pollution from bikes that would be emitted from cars or buses, leading to a more pleasant environment
- The costs are considerably less than using motorised transport
- There are clear physical benefits for the cyclist
- Especially in busy hours, cycling can be the quickest way around town
Problems with urban cycling
- At night, visibilty problems can arise, since some bicycles aren't equipped with headlamps
- Depending on the weather conditions, the act of cycling in town can be unpleasant if its raining hard or if there is lots of traffic and therefore fumes which can't be avoided by, say, putting the window up in a car
- In areas of the road without specified bicycle lanes, cycling can be dangerous and can slow down traffic which has no way of overtaking the slower bicycle.
