VOCM (referred to by its broadcasters as "Voice of the Common Man") is the callsign of a AM station in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. VOCM's AM station first went on the air in 1936.
In addition to hourly news reports and quickie features (such as Would You Believe?), VOCM airs shows like Open Line and Night Line (both live phone-in shows), and the Saturday Night Cabin Party, which is completely devoted to classic country music from the 1950s right up to the 1980s. (The Cabin Party used to air on the former KIXX Country -- see below.)
VOCM (broadcast on AM 590 in St. John's) is a part of the Steele Communications network. Its sister stations include K-Rock 97.5 FM (previously known as Magic 97), Radio Newfoundland 930 AM (previously known as Q-93, which played oldies), and Hits 99.1 FM (previously known as KIXX Country). Steele Communications also has radio stations in several other provinces in Canada.
VOCM's two stations are among just four broadcast radio stations in Canada whose call letters do not begin with C. The other two, VOAR and VOWR, also broadcast in St. John's. All three stations first aired before Newfoundland joined Canadian Confederation in 1949. The ITU prefix VO was originally assigned to Newfoundland and remains in use by radioamateurs.
Individual stations in the VOCM group now serving other Newfoundland communities have C callsigns.
