VPRO VPRO

VPRO - Definition and Overview

The VPRO (originally an acronym for Vrijzinnig Protestantse Radio Omroep, or "free-thinking protestant radio broadcasting company", but since long the acronym has been kept but its meaning dropped) was established in the Netherlands in 1926 as a religious broadcasting organization. However, in the 1950s and 1960s it became more free-thinking than protestant. It was the first to show a naked woman on Dutch television, Phil Bloom in 1967 [1] (http://members.lycos.nl/poph/archief/bloomphil.htm).

It is still the most radical group on Dutch television.

It often collaborates with other broadcasting organisations such as the WDR, the BBC, and Arte.

Like all Dutch public broadcasters the VPRO doesn't have its own channel. It shares the third Dutch public net.
