VQF is a proprietary audio file format that gained popularity in the mid to late 1990s. MP3 quickly overpowered VQF and the format stopped being regulary used around 1999. VQF files were found on HTTP or FTP servers rather than the more popular P2P servers. The compression algorithm used by VQF is more efficient than MP3. MP3 encoding and decoding is easier. There are still programs available that can convert files to VQF format as well as plugins for audio players, such as Winamp, that can play back VQF audio data.
