Venator-class Star Destroyer - Definition and Overview

The Venator-class Star Destroyer is a fictional warship from the Star Wars saga, introduced in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. "Venator" is Latin for "hunter."

The Venator-class Star Destroyer - also known as a Republic Assualt cruiser - was borne from the success of the Acclamator-class assault ship. While the assault ship was primarily an armed troop transport, the Venator was a warship through-and-through. Banks of turbolaser cannons and strong deflector shields made the Star Destroyer one of the most powerful and fearsome vessels of the time.

Venator-class Star Destroyers were deployed in a number of battles during the Clone Wars, most notably during the Battle of Coruscant when upwards of a thousand of the ships helped protect the capital. When the Republic fell to the Galactic Empire, the terrifying Imperial Star Destroyer was created; a warship even more deadly than the Venator.
