Verkhoyansk - Definition and Overview

Verkhoyansk (Верхоя́нск) a town in Yakutia, north-east Siberia, Russia, on the Yana River, near the Arctic Circle. A river port, a fur-collecting depot, and the center of a reindeer-raising area, it lies in the coldest area of the northern hemisphere. The lowest temperature recorded there was −71°C (−96°F). Founded in 1638, it was a place of political exile until 1917.

The greatest temperature range recorded is around the Siberian “cold pole”, in eastern Russia. Temperatures in Verkhoyansk have spanned 105°C (221°F): from -68°C (-90.4°F) to 37°C (98°F)
