Vespene gas is a resource found in the StarCraft universe.
According to Doran Routhe, a famous Terran scientist, solar systems outside of the Sun's could contain new resources. At least two have been discovered in the Koprulu Sector, Vespene and blue mineral crystals.
Vespene is a green gas which is emitted from geysers. It is widely sought after by the Terrans, Protoss and Zerg for different reasons. Terrans use it as an energy source, in a manner similar to the way we use fossil fuels now. Protoss use it as a catalyst for their psi-driven machines, and it is unknown what Zerg use it for. However, it's been rumored that exposure to raw Vespene created the Zerg Lurker and Devourer breeds.
Vespene and mineral formations slowly regrow over time on planets such as Antiga Prime; this allowed the Terrans to survive in the Koprulu Sector.
It is unknown if Vespene gas has any relation to Terrazine gas, a potent psionic reagent.
