Vevey - Definition and Overview

Vevey is a small city in Switzerland, located in the canton Vaud, on the north shore of Lake Geneva not far from Lausanne.

It has a population of 15,473 (2002).

It is the site for the world headquarters (but not fiscal HQ) of the food giant NestlĂ©, founded here in 1867. It organises the famous Winegrowers' Festival (FĂȘte des Vignerons) four to five times per century to celebrate its wine growing history and culture. A huge arena is built in the market place (Grande Place : the second biggest market place in Europe, after Lisbon, Portugal) which can hold 16'000 spectators.The festivals date from the 18th century and the last five were held in 1889, 1905, 1927, 1955 and 1999.
