 Vibhajyavada - Definition

Vibhajyavada (or Vibhajjavada) (Pali), literally "Teaching of Analysis". This is an umbrella classification for the subsects, that promote the concept of "Analysis". During the Third Buddhist Council, all orthodox schools, which were sub-divisions of Sthaviravada (Sanskrit) that had split during the reign of Emperor Asoka were regrouped into this new school. The Vibhajyavada promoted the critical method of investigation as opposed to blind faith. The answer has to be found by the aspirant, after being convinced by valid thought and experience, in order to reach the first glimpse of the goal.

This school was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Venerable Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka, who brought with him the Pali Canon. Vibhajjavada is known today as Theravada.
