Virgil Hamlin Goode Jr. (born October 17 1946), American politician, is a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, representing the Fifth Congressional District of Virginia. He is notable for switching parties and for being, for a time, one of only two independents in Congress. Born in Richmond, Virginia, he attended the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia graduating with a degree in Law. He also served in the National Guard from 1965 to 1979. Goode served in the Virginia State Senate from 1973 to 1997, when he was elected to the 105th Congress for the Democratic Party, but in January 2000, he declared himself an Independent and was elected to the 107th Congress. In August, 2002, he declared himself a Republican and was reelected again twice. He currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee.
