Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine - Definition and Overview

The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine is a unique college in that it is a state supported college of two states, Virginia and Maryland, filling the need for veterinary medicine education in both states. It is one of 27 colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States. Students from both states are considered "in-state" student for admissions purposes.

The school is considered a constiuent college of both the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and the University of Maryland. The main campus of the school is located on Virginia Tech's campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, and it maintains a branch on Maryland's campus in College Park, Maryland. It also has an Equine Center in Leesburg, Virginia. The college's program is designed to be finished in four years. The first three years are spent at the Blacksburg campus. For the final year, most students do clerkships at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg, while other are transferred to the branches at College Park or Leesburg.

The school was founded in 1978. The state of West Virginia, which still does not have a veterinary school, was also offered an oportunity to participate, but declined.
